I’m a newcomer to Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels, but boy are they giving me my money’s worth. Case in point: Excession. I wouldn’t recommend it as a first venture into the Culture, but if you’ve read a Culture novel before… You’re in for a brainride. Check out my review.

A really cool and nifty novel, that a good friend of mine, Alain, recommended to me. If you’re looking for a quirky, fresh yet tone-perfect take on the superhero genre, I strongly recommend Austin Grossman’s Soon I Will Be Invincible.

I recently had the chance to reread the dystopian novel Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley. Did you know that it was written in 1932? If it had been written in the eighties I would have found it pretty good satire, but from the thirties, this story of a future world where babies are born in bottles, and everyone is drugged into happiness, is chillingly prescient.

Yep, this is my second SF review in the same weekend! This one is about The Android’s Dream, by an author I love, John Scalzi. If you’ve never read John Scalzi before, do yourself a favor and pick up Old Man’s War! As for this one, well… Not as good. Read my review if you want to find out why.

It’s been a little while since I’ve read The Player of Games, but the novel made such an impression on me I just had to review it for my SF review webpage, Future Shock. If you like thought-provoking space opera, trust me on this one: you owe it to yourself to read this book, whether you’ve read any Culture novel before or not.

At the same time I’ve resurrected this blog, I’ve also taken it on myself to continue reviewing the SF novels I read. It’s a sort of journal of my reads, and I’ve found it insightful and useful to be able to reread the comments I had to make on a novel as written immediately after finishing it.

So, the first (new) review on Future Shock is Bios, by my favorite author, Robert Charles Wilson. Hope you enjoy it.
